Because these metal tools were used as a medium of exchange in early bartering, "Qian" eventually became the word for "money" or "currency," specifically referring to copper coins.

Origin: The lineage originates from the Peng (彭) surname. Peng Fu, a descendant of the legendary long-lived Peng Zu, served as a "Qianfu Shangshi" during the Western Zhou Dynasty (capital in modern-day Xi'an). The Qianfu was the government office in charge of the treasury and financial affairs, and Shangshi was a high-ranking official title. His descendants adopted his official post as their surname.
