Interpretation of the Ying Clan Totem
[Definition] The original meaning of "Ying" (應) involves commitment, echo, and coordination. There is a deep historical connection between the characters "Ying" (應) and "Yan" (雁, wild goose); in ancient scripts, "Ying" was written as "Yan." When wild geese fly in formation, an old leading goose honks from high above to signal the flock behind. Each goose responds in turn as they advance to ensure none are left behind. This behavior gave rise to the extended meaning of the word "Ying" (to respond/coordinate). The Ying people were likely a clan that hunted wild geese for food and survival. They adopted the wild goose as their original clan totem, naming their tribe and emblem after it, which eventually evolved into a state and the surname Ying.
[Origin] The surname originates from the Ji (姬) family name, descending from the offspring of King Wu of Zhou (Ji Fa). It is a surname derived from the name of a fiefdom. After King Wu overthrew the Shang Dynasty, he enfeoffed his fourth son, Ying Shu, in the region of Ying (present-day Zhiyang Town, Xinhua District, Pingdingshan, Henan). He was known as the Marquis of Ying, held the rank of Count, and later established the State of Ying (also referred to as the State of the Eagle). His descendants adopted the state's name as their surname.
